How to Date a Funny Girl

How to Date a Funny Girl

Find her at the center of a group of people, watching her, eagerly listening and anticipating her next punchline. Find her staring at the intimidating but inviting light of a bonfire, with a goofy expression that discreetly demands and silently commands respect and attention. Wherever you find her, find her eyes sparkling, her lips moving and her hands flailing with calculated randomness.
Make sure that you laugh with her and make it count. Lure her into wanting to find out from whom that hearty snicker is coming from. Meet her gaze, and in your mind, trace the movement of her lips while you dance to the beat of her hands. Be child-like and sheepishly hug her from behind, tuck her unruly hair behind her ear and whisper something incoherent – be scheming, and guide her to an unexpected slow dance. Do not mind the hesitation rooting from her slapstick suspicion and just tap dance your way to her skipping heart, Charlie Chaplin style.
Insist on giving her a ride home, and allow her to nervously make a joke out of it. Then just kiss her, unapologetically, until she kisses you back –and oh boy, she will. Let her say goodbye with a witty retort that cleverly harmonizes self preservation and sarcasm.
Then let her be. Give her a few days to regain her confidence and come up with a skit, but be forewarned. She will unconsciously fuck it up. She will either hug a stranger just because, or let him kiss her, the way that you kissed her, too. Find comfort in the promise that she will think of you and remember how, with you, it was magical.
Let her try to make you believe that she doesn’t take life seriously. Enjoy your time with her, as you make fun of pain together. Let her win the endless staring contests; reward her with your assuring smile – and an ice cold bottle of beer. Let her propose a toast and end it on a happy note because that is how she secretly declares how happy she is that she finally found you.
When finally you’re left alone, be still with her. Let her strip off her one-liners, anecdotes and word play. Allow her to speak to you with emotional nudity and know that for a funny girl, silence and seriousness evoke as much fear as a murderer would when one crosses paths with him. And, if she’s ready, just love her.
You do not just date a funny girl.  Like a classic romantic comedy, you fall in love with her – insanely, and with a thigh-slapping laughter you close a chapter… so you can start writing your happily ever after “one joke after another.”
